Endodontic instruments and their choice

Endodontics is a dental procedure that includes dental root canal treatment. This is the most important part of complex dental treatment. To conduct all manipulations efficiently, it is necessary to use special endodontic equipment and instruments. Most of them are designed to extirpate pulp and then obturate and treat root canals.

Features and varieties

Most instruments and endodontic devices, used in modern dentistry, have a distinct design, developed 50 or even 100 years ago. However, in the recent years, fundamental changes have been made which increased instruments efficiency, quality, and standards.

To select the right instrumentation, first, you have to choose its type. Thus, all the instruments are divided into:

  • manual;
  • machine.

Most models are made of:

  • carbon steel;
  • nickel and titanium alloy;
  • chromium and nickel alloy.

Chromium-nickel alloy products are considered to be of high quality. Such instrument possesses a number of advantages if compared to other counterparts:

  • “safe” upper working part availability;
  • high flexibility and the ability to “memorize” the initial position of the working part when curved;
  • easier work when the root canal is widened.

Endodontic instruments are subdivided by design to carry out:

Standardization

In the international dental practice, a special set of coding options was adopted simplifying work with endodontic instruments. To select the necessary instrumentation, we recommend you to learn about:

  1. Geometric code system: square, circle, triangle, octagon, or spiral. This coding describes the instrument working part cross-section.
  2. Digital code system: values from 6 to 140. The digital value is inscribed on the factory packaging or on the handle. It shows the product diameter in millimeters. For example, a value of 8 indicates a 0.08 mm diameter.
  3. Color code system: six basic and three intermediate colors. During the dental root canal widening procedure, any of colors must not be skipped.

Endodontic instrument structural features:

  1. A rod with a working part.
  2. A polymer handle. It has digital, color and geometric encoding values markings.
  3. Silicone stopper. It is necessary to fix the product working length. It can differ in length: 21, 25, 28, 31 millimeters. But, the working part length is a constant value: 16 millimeters.
